The urbanisation phenomenon is bringing many challenges to modern societies. The number of people moving to the city increases yearly, and so does the demand for goods and services, to meet their needs. Moreover, climate issues and the COVID-19 pandemic have led to a radical change in people’s habits, with the increased use of e-commerce platforms, especially in the fashion and food sectors. The several restrictions imposed by governments have made people much more likely to buy goods online putting additional stress on last-mile on-demand systems.
Last-mile logistics is one of the most cost-intensive activities of the supply chain, as well as one of the most polluting operations if not properly organised. The main issue lies in the lack of cooperation between delivery providers, which leads to the creation of more congestion during rush hours, traffic collisions and unnecessary trips to the same places, with a negative impact on the social sustainability of cities.
Seeking the improvement of this sector is one of LEAD’s goals, which is now organising with SENATOR and AIIT a special session called “Innovations in last-mile logistics towards inclusivity, resilience and sustainability” to foster the research of new innovation towards a more sustainable and efficient last-mile logistic system. Actions may include multiple aspects, such as the integration between passenger and freight transport, stakeholder engagement in last-mile logistics planning or the role of digital platforms supporting on-demand logistics.
This special session will be coordinated by Michela Le Pira (University of Catania & AIIT), Carla Nascimento (Molde University College) and with the support of Nadia Giuffrida and Francesco Pilla (University College Dublin & SENATOR project), Rodrigo Tapia and Lorant Tavasszy (TU Delft and LEAD project).
If you are interested, please request your abstracts, including title, authors’ names and contact detail to Michela Le Pira and Carla Nascimento by the 27th February 2022. You can find more information here.
