SURF opens call for funding on Zero Emission Zones for Freight and experts research
SURF (Sustainable URban Freight)is a recently launched project, funded by the Environmental Defense Fund Europe, which aims at guiding city planners, business leaders and other freight decision-makers to develop a vision and strategy pathway for sustainable freight.
The project will run from April to December 2021 and will particularly focus on the design and implementation of Zero-Emission Zones for freight (ZEZ-Fs), which can dramatically reduce carbon emissions and contribute to healthier cities. SURF will also build practice and partnerships to launch innovative solutions and measures for the decarbonisation of the freight sector, with a focus on urban logistics.

During its launch event, in mid-April, two calls, of particular interest to stakeholders working with sustainable urban freight, were launched:
- Call for instant projects, open to local authorities to identify or test elements contributing to the design and implementation of ZEZ-Fs in European cities and regions. The deadline for application is 14 May.
- Call for experts, open to experts to carry out training, studies, on-demand technical assistance for city planners, business leaders and other freight decision-makers. The call stays open during the project.
